The Big Freeze and Big Thaw - Be Prepared1.07.16am GMT Sat 16th Jan 2010
Local Liberal Democrats are urging people to be prepared and take care during the big freeze. Following several days of cold weather and snow, temperatures plummeted to around -10C on Wednesday night. Now the icy weather is beginning to break, slush and slippery footways will bring further problems. There is also a fog warning at present. Hopefully these will be a thing of the past now but for the latest news on school closures, please click this link - http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/weather-disruption Councillor Ann Holtom said, "Birmingham City Council's grit teams have done a first class job keeping the main routes open. But some side roads will inevitably be hazardous with the severe temperatures causing ice. Always take extra care when walking. The top snow may be starting to melt but there may still be ice hidden underneath. "If you are going to drive, firstly please ask yourself if your journey is absolutely necessary. If you must travel, check your tyre pressure, water levels, oil levels and do not set off until your windows are completely clear. Take care at junctions where traffic builds up such as Gravelly Hill, on the Expressway and more locally at Spitfire Island. "Also, please do check on elderly or other vulnerable neighbours during this cold snap to ensure they are safe, well-stocked with food and have enough heat in their homes. If you are aware of individuals who need help in Tyburn Ward please let me know".
