Six key priorities for our City in 2010 and beyond

An update to the Liberal Democrats policy priorities for Birmingham by Cllr Paul Tilsley

In the first few months of 2010 the Liberal Democrats conducted a massive public consultation exercise to identify the views of Birmingham people on the key issues which need to be fixed by your Council. We made those key issues our priorities for Birmingham at the city council elections in May 2010 and we have now built on them further and added more detail.

The six to fix Liberal Democrat priorities going forward from October 2010 are as follows:

Make Birmingham safer

Work with the police to further reduce crime & develop community policing

Put more officers on the streets - reduce police paperwork

Simplify the contact numbers for community policing teams

More special constables - by giving them a 50% cut in Council Tax bills

Quality Education for all

Improve on Birmingham's already above national average exam results

Provide additional primary school places to meet rising pupil numbers

Provide Increase literacy & numeracy skills for all

Provide additional social homes

Build 500 new Council homes in 2011/12

Renovate 500 run down family homes bringing them back into use

Compulsory purchase 500 unfit homes & bring them back into use as family homes

Axe Labour's unfair £18 per week "tenant tax" & use the money to build new homes

Improve Brum's roads & pavements by 2015

Upgrade all pavements to national standards

Upgrade all roads to national standards

Replace or upgrade street lighting creating brighter & safer streets

A Cleaner City

Rapidly clear all fly tipping & graffiti

Meet the city's ambitious recycling rates

Crack down on "litter louts" & graffiti vandals

A Greener City

Provide 10,000 homes with solar panels - reducing home energy bills

Fit solar panels to Council owned buildings generating £1 million to support council services

Maintain a continued commitment to reducing CO2 emissions

Encourage people to use public transport & retain the pensioners bus pass

Your continuing support for the Liberal Democrats in our area will help up to achieve these policy objectives for you and your family.
