Up to 500 new homes year are planned by Birmingham City Council

Cllr Ann Holtom, Liberal Democrat representative for Tyburn Ward, has welcomed the news that Birmingham City Council plans to build up to 500 new homes annually to ease the housing shortage in the city.

The first homes will be built for rent and that will be followed by shared ownership schemes and open market sales.

Building work is to start at four sites in the city in the spring of next year and the new homes are expected to be completed by Easter of 2011.

The house building programme will start to reduce the housing waiting list."Good news" says Councillor Ann Holtom.

Cllr Ann Holtom has welcomed the new house building programme, describing it as a boost to families who are seeking a home at affordable rents. "We have waited almost 40 years for the council to start building homes, while the number of people waiting for a home has increased substantially."

"This new house building programme will at last start to reduce the housing waiting list - which is very welcome news."
