Campaigners welcome Lib Dem plans for Post Office and Royal Mail

Lorely Burt MP and a local campaigner against Post Offfice closures present a dramatic image of what Labour and Conservative governments have done to our Post Office and Royal Mail networks

At meeting of Sutton Coldfield and Erdington Liberal Democrats held last night, local activists and campaigners welcomed the decisions made at the party conference in Harrogate in response to the Government's strongly criticised plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail.

The conference passed a series of proposals on what should be done with Royal Mail. While they support the idea of part-privatisation, the Lib Dem proposals greatly differ from the Government's. They argue for the importance of staff-ownership to any modernisation, and of making sure both the Post Office and the Royal Mail are able to compete effectively.

The local party endorsed the call to continue to campaign against the dismal failure of both Labour and the Conservatives to protect the Post Office network and ensure Royal Mail is able to compete effectively.

Local post offices remain under threat and while Labour has been responsible for forcing the recent round of closures, it should not be forgotten that the last Conservative government presided over 3,000 Post Office closures around the country.

Solihull MP Lorely Burt (Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) and Lib Dem West Midlands Euro MP, Liz Lynne, have spearheaded the campaign in this region against Post Office closures and for a viable and competitive Royal Mail. Sutton and Erdington campaigners have pledged to support their fight for these vital local and community services.
