Brum better run by Lib Dems than Labour - and that's from the Audit Commission.

March 9, 2008 5:41 PM

Council HouseThe independent Audit Commission has awarded Lib Dem run City of Birmingham Council an excellence rating of three stars. This is in stark contrast to the days of Labour control when the Audit Commission refused to award any stars and branded the authority as weak and failing.

In his annual report, Lib Dem Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, Paul Tilsley, said, "We are constantly improving. We have become a three star council and this is an excellent achievement. We have in no uncertain terms moved away from being labelled a weak authority as Birmingham was under Labour and I expect we will continue to improve. Our continuous striving for improvement encourages me."

Councillor Tilsley said he wanted to make Birmingham "the incontestable second city in the UK." He added, "making better use of resources, encouraing growth and prosperity whilst containing and reducing our global footprint are major challenges for us all and require commitment. Clearly the city council has a key leadership role to play.

Cllr Tilsley was proud that the Audit Commision had ranked Birmingham in the top 30% of councils for the delivery of 120 key performance indicators. The Council's business transformation project which seeks to save £10 billion over ten years through efficient ways of working was leading the way in the UK he said.
